I've installed Windows 7 on my Dell Studio Laptop. In the Device Manager, I have an unknown device showing, which reports as being Intel(R) ICH8M-E LPC Interface Controller - 2815 Under System Devices, there is an identical device that has the correct driver installed. If I try to install the same driver for that device, the Unknown Device remains. I've also tried installing the following driver But the device remains as Unknown.
Can anyone help? My laptop is; Dell Studio 1735: Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 Graphics: 256 MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3650 Memory Dual Channel 3.0GB (1X2GB + 1X1GB) 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Hard Drive 250GB Serial ATA. I've already tried installing that Driver. Did a bit more digging and found out that it is actually the Infra Red receiver, and I've now installed the driver for it and the Unknown Device no longer shows.

I installed the following driver for my machine. I think the clue is in the Hardware IDs ACPI ITE8708,.ITE8708 It's an ITE CIR receiver. I've already tried installing that Driver. I think the clue is in the Hardware IDs ACPI ITE8708,.ITE8708 It's an ITE CIR receiver. The drivers for this device are included within the Windows 7 installation already, you just need to browse for them Right click on the device, and goto Properties.
Goto the Driver tab, and click on Update Driver. Click on the 'Browse my computer for driver software' option, then let me pick from a list of device drivers. Click on the show all devices option, and then select Intel from the Manufacturer side.
In the right hand side (Model) scroll down until you find your Model, in my case it was Intel(R) 82801FBM LPC Interface Controller - 2641.(Note the (R) on Intel. Click on Next and hey presto, the correct Windows 7 driver will be installed without any additional downloads. Hope this helps someone. You are an effin GENIUS, I have been searching online for this driver for hours. I used to use a program called radarsync that would automatically search and download missing or outdated drivers but they recently started charging for their service. I found a similar program called device doctor but it does not download the drivers for you, it just takes you to a site to download the drivers. If anyone knows of any similar free software that will automatically download and install drivers please let me know.

Almost a year after your post!!! I sure hope you read this because you helped me immensely. Many thanx -michael. If you are like me and have the ibm thinkpad t43/p model and see the unknown device error mentioned above when you install windows 7 you'll need to do the following to clear it up and have it install the driver correctly. First you need the tpm driver. (try here:then after you download the driver, install the driver. This will NOT IMMEDIATELY FIX THIS ISSUE!!!
After it installs you will need to goto the device in device manager and bring up properties and MANUALLY UPDATE the driver. This will work NO OTHER WAY! Please don't tell me to do a bazillion other methods because none work. THIS WORKS AND I JUST TESTED TWICE ON MY THINKPAD T43 WITHOUT ANY ERRORS. You will Need to MANUALLY UPDATE, DONT LET WINDOWS DO IT BECAUSE IT WILL FAIL. Select the path to the directory that was created during the install. (probably something like c: drivers win tpm You only need to point the driver update to the drivers path but if you want to drill all the way down that works too.
Once you have the path go ahead and click okay and after a second or two you will have the driver updated and the error clears. The reason for the error is because IBM/LENOVO did NOT follow microsofts software update guidelines. If they did you wouldnt see this error. Then again this is for a system that is somewhat old so i guess you could say they dont bother updating older systems. In any event i like the performance i see with windows 7 on the t43. While it isn't blazing fast it works and runs good. I've already tried installing that Driver.
